(Meredith) — An extensive search for a missing 11-year-old boy in California came to a tragic end when police discovered the boy's body in his neighborhood.
Roman Anthony Lopez was last seen Saturday morning at his home in Placerville, about 45 miles north of Sacramento. Hours after he disappeared, the Placerville Police Department found the 11-year-old dead.
His death is being investigated as suspicious, the department said in a statement.
"This event is very tragic for all involved and we appreciate your patience while we conduct a thorough investigation," the statement reads, in part.
The boy's biological mother, Rochelle "Shelly" Lopez, told CBS Sacramento that she found out about his death online.
“They told me it was Roman, and that was the last thing I was expecting to hear,” said Lopez, who currently lives in Wisconsin.
She said she hadn't seen Roman for about two years because his father had full custody. Lopez said she's fighting for information about what happened and plans to travel to California to get answers.
On Sunday, the Placerville Police Department held a press conference on the case but did not answer any questions or provide additional information.
Neighbors have since created a memorial for Roman outside of a home next to a church, the Sacramento Bee reported.
Anyone with information about his death is asked to call Placerville police at 530-642-5210.
