COBB COUNTY, Ga. (CBS46) — Nine days after classes started in Cobb County, 5th graders at East Side Elementary will now learn from home for the next nine days.

According to a Cobb County School District spokesperson, 5th graders will learn virtually from Aug. 12-20 "due to the number of students or staff in quarantine."

The district did not provide the number of students and staff that were in quarantine or that had tested positive for COVID-19. According to the most recent data, there are 253 active cases in the district. Three of those were listed at East Side Elementary. It is likely that those numbers have increased.

"When providing high-quality instruction in a classroom is not possible...we look forward to each student receiving a high quality virtual experience through Cobb teachers and the Cobb Teaching and Learning System,” the spokesperson added.

Several parents we spoke with tell us they believe the district could have done more to prevent this from happening, like mandating masks.

"We had an 11 to 11:30, it was like an hour, hour and a half. I was, I'm in Buckhead right now but luckily my husband was working remotely and he was able to go and pick Izzy up," said Emma Dix, mother to a 5th grade student at the school. "This morning when I put the kids on the bus, I had no, absolutely zero indication that a remote chance that they were going to go remote."

She says she and her husband work, so they like to send their children physically to school but don't necessarily feel comfortable with no mask mandate.

Other parents we spoke with share similar views.

"We need to bring back the similar protocols we had last semester where if you're going in person, there were barriers, the kids had masks, there was a mask mandate at that point," said Devesh Ranjan, who has two children who attend East Side.

We asked the district how many positive cases are at the school, specifically in the 5th grade. A spokesperson pointed us to weekly data which is updated every Friday. The latest was released on the 6th which showed three active cases at the elementary school.

5th grade students can head back to in person learning on August 23rd.
