ATLANTA, Ga. (CBS46)- Atlanta City Councilman Ivory Lee Young Jr is in intensive care at Emory University Hospital after a fall left him unresponsive and with severe brain damage.

The district three councilman was getting into the car with his wife Thursday when he fell and lost oxygen to his brain, his pastor Gerald Durley told CBS46.

“Certainly, it was a shock and it came so sudden,” said Durley, pastor emeritus of Providence Missionary Baptist Church, where young serves as a deacon. “They are a very spiritual family so they know that the will of God will be done and everything is being done possible,” Durley continued.

Early last month, he received a successful stem cell transplant in hopes of prolonging life in remission. When he fell, he lost oxygen and has suffered severe brain damage. He was unresponsive and depending on a respirator Friday.

“Right now, the lack of oxygen on the brain is challenging for the doctors and the medical condition so the family and all those around, his father, they’re pretty much in a state of prayer right now,” Durley said.

Durley has known young and his family for more than 20 years, he says this tragedy is difficult because it’s so personal.

“When he was married, I did his wedding. When I was pastor at Providence, he was the deacon there for over 20 years. Many of the decisions that he made in the Vine City area over the years, we prayed about it, we talked about it,” Durley told CBS46. “If you had to summarize Ivory Young, he was a caregiver beyond a political servant. He truly cared so that’s why you see the outpouring all over,” he added.

Durley says the Young family has “guarded optimism” about Young’s condition and are hoping for a miracle.
