UPDATE (CBS46) — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and Holly Springs Police Department, held a news conference Thursday afternoon to provide more information on the incident that led to the death of a police officer and a suspect.
The officer has been identified as Joe Burson, a 1-year veteran of the Holly Springs Police Department.
The GBI said they were requested by Holly Springs PD just after 1 a.m. Thursday. Around 11 p.m., according to the GBI, Holly Springs Police officers were conducting a traffic stop on Harmony Lake Drive at Hickory Road.
"At some point during the traffic stop, one suspect...dragged [Officer Burson] down Hickory Road, said Nelly Miles, GBI Public Affairs Director. "During that traffic stop, [Burson] was able to fire shots at the suspect."
Both Officer Burson and the suspect died following the incident.
Holly Springs Police Chief Tom Keheley said the investigation is still going on and could not provide specific details on what happened during the stop that lead to the deadly confrontation.
"I cannot get into anything about the suspect at this time," Keheley said. "That is totally up to the GBI.
Chief Keheley said Burson's probable cause for the traffic stop was speed and said it should've been a simple stop.
"The bottom line is, every bit of this could've been avoided," Keheley added.
An independent investigation by the GBI is ongoing. We will continue to provide information as it becomes available. You can watch the entire news conference below.
