Brookhaven Police change nightclub hours to curb crime

The city of Brookhaven is rolling back bar and club hours.

Brookhaven police made the recommendation saying it's a matter of public safety after a study which shows between January and July 2017 they received more than 880 calls from their 10 area clubs and bars.

Officials say those calls range from DUIs to shooting and some were even gang related.

Brookhaven police says the problem has overwhelmed their resources, leaving them with less officers to patrol other areas.

"We shout be able to ride through neighborhoods and do residential checks to make sure cars are not being broken into and driveways and houses aren't being broken into overnight were simply not able to proactively patrol those areas because of the amount of time we spend at these businesses," said Major Brandon Gurley.

As a result the city has rolled back club hours. Locations that once served alcohol till 3 a.m. now have to stop serving at 2 a.m..

The changes go into effect at midnight, April 10.
