CARROLLTON, Ga. (CBS46) – A Carroll County high school athlete died Saturday after a battle with stage 4 lymphoma.

Chase McDaniel, who was a student and football player at Carrollton High School, was diagnosed with the disease in April after he complained of stomach pains that wouldn’t go away.

Students at the school Sunday night told CBS46 it was a devastating loss.

"It just hurts," Ethan Jindrich, a classmate, said. "Chase was the type of guy to always put a smile on your face, no matter what time of day."

According to a Facebook post by Kiki Koger McDaniel, Chase was released from the hospital in August and returned to school where he was greeted with a rousing ovation from coaches and players. He also returned to the football field as one of the captains. The cancer returned and McDaniel succumbed to complications from the disease.

"He was definitely one of the most important players on our team, a true captain," Jindrich said. "He was a fighter, I think that was a great word to describe Chase."
