Danvinci Barcelo is set on bringing Freaknik back.
“We're asking for a permit not permission because it’s definitely going to happen,” he said.
But the people in the Castleberry Hill neighborhood, where the event is scheduled to take place, don't want it to happen. As a result, Barcelo said he still can't get the proper permit.
“We're in the appeals process of it,” he said. “However things are looking very promising.”
Michael Paul, the Castleberry Hill neighborhood association president said Barcelo doesn't have a plan in place for security, street closures, or trash pick up.
“He just was not compliant as it related to the regulations put out by the neighborhood association, neighborhood planning unit, public safety and the police,” Paul said.
Now the fight for or against I-Freaknik has turned ugly. Some residents who oppose the event told reporter Ashley Thompson that Barcelo is attacking them on social media.
“He's specifically tagging Habanos Cigar Lounge in a lot of his posts, calling us cowards,” said Donna Matthews, who owns the lounge.
Residents say they're also upset with some graphic images Barcelo has shared online to promote the event.
“The way that he’s presenting it and what is being presented on social media is not the event that he said was going to happen here,” Paul said.
Barcelo said what he posts online is his free speech. He said right now he's focused on hiring security for the event, which he said will go on as planned.
“These other entities are able to have their meetings and things like that without the drama that i have to go through,” he said.
