Even smart consumers can be victims of fraud.

CBS46’s Alicia Roberts handed over a rent check to her landlord. Before he could deposit the check, it was stolen from him.

The criminal manufactured two other checks on Roberts’ account and forged her signature. Fortunately, Roberts’ bank alerted her of suspicious activity, and she didn’t lose any money.

But Roberts had to deal with the hassle of being without funds while the old account was closed and a new one opened. Now she and her landlord have an agreement that he will mobile deposit her check and then tear it up.

Better Call Harry reports on what you need to know, whether you use paper checks or bill pay.
