The City of Winder is the latest municipality dealing with a cyber-attack.
A city spokesperson has confirmed the city was hit with a virus on Monday that is currently affecting the city’s servers. The point of entry is unknown at this time.
The United States Secret Service is investigating the source of the virus.
According to the city, all archives, records and city email have been shut down as a precaution. Emergency services are still functional, and citizens are still able to pay bills online.
A ransom of one bitcoin per server has been demanded, and the city has about 40 servers total. The ransom approximates to nearly $320,000.
The Secret Service has told the city this virus is a new one. It did not exist before last week.
