Community to say goodbye to slain suburban Atlanta police officer

A community will say goodbye Friday to an Atlanta police officer who was gunned down as he helped other officers serve a "no knock" warrant in a drug case.

Major Greg Barney was shot while helping Clayton County officers serve a search warrant at an apartment complex in Riverdale, south of Atlanta's airport. Police say Riverdale officers, including Barney, were guarding the perimeter while Clayton County police entered the apartment.

Jerand Ross is charged with murder in the shooting death of Barney. The 24-year-old Ross was wounded in the gun battle, but expected to survive.

The funeral for Maj. Greg Barney will be held Saturday at 12 p.m. at Saint Philip AME Church in Atlanta. The public visitation will be held Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Gregory B. Levett and Sons Funeral Home.

Barney's final ride through Riverdale will take place at 3:30 p.m. Friday. The procession starts at Gregory B. Levett and Sons Funeral Home and will proceed to Flat Shoals Parkway. The procession will continue to I-285 west to Georgia Highway 85 South to Town Center Drive and then on to Town Center.

Major Barney will lie in state at the Riverdale Town Center from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. There will be time for public comment from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Officials are asking that the entire community come out alongside Riverdale Road at Church Street to salute Major Barney.
