A Covington Police Officer was shot in the head near a shopping plaza Monday afternoon on Industrial Boulevard.

The officer, 34-year-old Matt Cooper, was airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center.

The incident began as a shoplifting call at a Walmart involving three people. Police say the suspects stole bandanas from the store.

Two individuals were arrested immediately, but the third suspect fled on foot. A total of three gunshots were fired, one of which was a fatal self-inflicted gunshot sustained by the suspect.

The suspect with the self-inflicted wound has been identified as 21-year-old Demonta Fleming.

Officer Cooper remains in critical but stable condition. A vascular surgeon is expected to remove the bullet which is lodged in Cooper's Carotid artery.

Covington Police officials posted on their Facebook page that Officer Cooper "mouthed the words 'I love you' to his wife." According to the post, Cooper's wife has not left his side since he's been hospitalized.
