DA probing Douglas Co. coroner at center of CBS46 Bulldog investigation

Days after an exclusive CBS46 Bulldog investigation exposed how your tax dollars are being spent in rural Douglas County, we've confirmed that the District Attorney there is investigating.

The D.A. declined to comment beyond that.

Multiple sources have reached out to the Bulldog team, saying they have either spoken to the D.A. or have submitted information they feel needs investigating.

On Tuesday night, we exposed how a critical audit and some on the county's Board of Commissioners have questioned coroner Renee Godwin's spending and the use of staff and resources.

Since taking office less than two years ago, she has asked for multiple budget and staff increases, and has repeatedly burned through her budget.

Furthermore, in our initial investigation, when requested, she provided inconsistent data, raising questions about the accuracy of her office's bookkeeping.

Godwin has refused an on-camera interview, but has sent us written statements defending her office.

On Thursday, she told us she was unaware of the D.A probe, but stood by her budgeting and other departmental decisions.

The county manager, the highest non-elected official in the county, has not returned our calls since we reached out to him Wednesday. We've also reached out to the Board of Commissioners to see if they plan to revisit this.

We haven't heard back from spokesman Rick Martin.
