Life is busy at the Stills home in Stone Mountain.
In addition to their normal routine, they’ve been dealing with Dekalb County concerning their water bill for nearly two years.
"I have a full-time job, a five-year-old and a three-year-old. I have all these other bills to pay," said Hope Stills. "We’ve sold our home, we’re trying to move. We close on one house and open on another on the same day and I can’t focus on what I need to focus on because I’m fighting a battle with the county so the next person that lives here doesn’t have to."
They said they informed the water department more than a year ago about their faulty meter which you can’t read and isn’t event connected electronically.
"So every time I see the water guy come I’m like hey you can’t use that wand, but I still see the guy using the wand so whatever information that wand is giving them… that’s not connected," said Stills. "So they’re not reading it electronically and you can’t read it manually so where are you getting these numbers you keep sending me?"
So CBS46 contacted the county and they said the Stills' bill is in dispute and they’re not required to make any payments at this time.
"Oh well you don’t have to pay it, well I might not have to pay it, but somebody else is going to be living here in 15 days. I’ve sold my home. They didn’t buy DeKalb County’s problems," said Stills. "You know I’ve been fighting this for two years and now I’m fighting to not have the next person fight this battle."
After questioning the county about the nagging problem, they immediately contacted the Stills about replacing their meter.
"You’re overbilling people, you’re not fixing the problem and then you’re standing in a sinking ship saying everything is fine instead of actually taking responsibility and saying we have problems, we need to fix it, let’s do something," said Stills.
If you notice a problem with your bill or water meter contact the county and file a dispute immediately then double check to make sure they have record of your dispute.
Officials with DeKalb County issued the following statement regarding the water billing issue:When a customer identifies an issue with their meter or bill they are encouraged to officially dispute their bill through the County’s dispute process.
