ATLANTA, Ga. (CBS46) -- Four hundred years ago this month: August 1619 the first slave ship arrived on America's shores in Virginia.

In a series of essays on slavery, The New York Times Magazine just released what's called "The 1619 Project." But former Georgia Congressman Newt Gingrich is stirring up controversy calling the series of essays and report "a lie."

A Clark Atlanta University professor of African American studies is pushing back on the former House Speaker’s opinion.
