Hecht campaign blasts Attorney General Olens over CBS46 investigation

The campaign for Greg Hecht, Democratic candidate for attorney general, blasted Attorney General Sam Olens Wednesday over a CBS46 investigation that found Olens ignored allegations of public corruption. You can see CBS46's investigation here.

"What is clear from these allegations is an undeniable pattern of Attorney General Olens failing to investigate potential public corruption," wrote Joe Cullar, the Hecht for Georgia campaign manager.

Cullar continued, "[e]arlier this month we learned that Olens is facing a motion for sanctions for hiding evidence in the ethics whistleblower case. And now we learn that CBS46's investigation found further proof of Olens failing to investigate public corruption."

CBS46 investigative reporter Jeff Chirico reported Monday that Olens' office hasn't investigated allegations that officials within the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia, University of Georgia and Georgia Perimeter College conspired to oust two employees.

Olens' spokesperson Lauren Kane admitted the office hadn't investigated, even though Olens is spending taxpayer dollars defending lawsuits over the claims.

"Georgians deserve an honest state government and right now they have little reason to trust what they see at the Capitol," wrote Cullar.

Former Georgia Perimeter College president Anthony Tricoli filed a lawsuit in May charging Board of Regents and GPC officials with violating the state's RICO statute for manipulating the college budget in order to force Tricoli out.

In another RICO lawsuit, UGA professor Dezso Benedek claimed UGA officials manufactured evidence and an assistant attorney general withheld evidence in his tenure revocation case in 2010.

Olens is named as a defendant in both lawsuits for allegedly protecting university officials.

Olens has asked the court to dismiss the lawsuits, claiming government employees have immunity.

Kane described the allegations as "outlandish conspiracy theories" but it's unclear how that was determined without an investigation.
