Officers in Gwinnett County were forced to fatally shoot an armed man who was walking along Peachtree Industrial Boulevard early Thursday morning.

The shooting happened shortly before 4 a.m. near the Shell gas station on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Sugar Hill.

Police received a call about an armed man walking along the roadway. When officers confronted the man, he allegedly pulled a gun out of his waistband and began to raise it towards them.

The man has been identified as 27-year-old Steven Hutchins of Buford.

One of the officers then fired shots at Hutchins, striking him at least once. Hutchins was later pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured.

Two lanes on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard were blocked as police investigated the scene.
