A man was shot and killed Sunday by an off-duty police officer in Clayton County Sunday.

The shooting took place around 12:45 p.m. at the El Dixie Plaza on Old Dixie Highway.

Police say an altercation that started inside a restaurant moved to the parking lot, where shots were fired. The off-duty Clayton County police officer was working at a church across the street from the parking lot when he heard the gunshots.

"He heard gunfire, put it out on the radio...made contact with the perpetrator," according to Captain Gazzara Hill with the Clayton County Police Department. "[The] perpetrator retrieved a gun from his waist, fired at the officer. The officer returned fire."

A spokesperson with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation says the man got into an argument with three people as they were trying to leave the restaurant.

Witness Roman Zamore was inside the restaurant and saw what happened.

"We were inside and this guy was talking back to each other, and they said, 'Come outside and prove who you are,'" said Zamore. That's when the witness says the altercation moved outside, which is when he heard shots fired and watched police arrive.

The unidentified man was taken to the hospital, where he later died, according to the GBI spokesperson.

The officer involved was not hurt. The other three individuals involved in the argument were also not hurt.

The GBI is investigating the shooting.
