Restaurant Report Card: Eataliano - 51; Fat Matt's wins Golden Spatula

We found a legendary hole in the wall spot this week.

We’re at Fat Matt’s Rib Shack on Piedmont Avenue in Atlanta, and nothing has changed over 30 years at this spot. You get great BBQ, it’s absolutely delicious and you get that old school feel when you come in here.

Plus, they have live Blues music every single night of the week. I’m going to tell you about what’s on their menu coming up, but first here’s this week’s best and worst scores.

We went deep into a local kitchen to get to the bottom of a failed health inspection. Eataliano on Briarcliff Road in DeKalb County scored only 51 points and a “U” for unsatisfactory.

The report said parmesan cheese and tomatoes were at the wrong temperature. Also, an employee touched garlic bread and pizza with their bare hands. There was also a dirty beverage nozzle in the restaurant.

When asked about the beverage nozzle, manager Stuart Spears said they clean them every day.

“No, we are cleaning the beverage nozzles,” he said. “In fact, one of the employees we had behind the bar gave her an incorrect answer on how often we are cleaning the beverage nozzles. The nozzles are cleaned every single day. The only thing I can think of was someone didn’t clean it that evening before.”

Management claims they’ve cleaned up their act since that inspection. They’ve not only cleaned the drink nozzles, but purchased new equipment to keep food at the right temperature and insisted employees wear gloves when handling food.

“I can guarantee as long as I’m here, it won’t ever happen again,” Spears said.

Now to some good scores:

In Gwinnett County, Paizano’s on Jones Street in Norcross received 90 points and an “A”.

In Clayton County, Taste of China on County Line Road in Fayetteville picked up a 93.

In Cobb County, Chipotle on Townpark Lane in Kennesaw scored 99 points and an “A”.

And back at Fat Matts on Piedmont Avenue in Atlanta, they picked up a perfect 100 on their health inspection score and they are the winner of this week’s Golden Spatula Award.

Let me show you what they have on the menu. You’ve got the chopped pork sandwich which looks really good, and you can come in and order the half a bird. And my favorite right here, the rack of ribs. Every time I come I’ve got to have it. It gets messy, but it’s worth it.

Boy that’s good!
