Restaurant Report Card: IHOP- 62U; Hattie B's wins Golden Spatula Award

The DeKalb County Health Department busted a major Metro Atlanta restaurant chain this week for having food at unsafe temperatures and a serious problem with insects.

But it’s not all bad this week, as we visited a spot where the chicken is hot and the health score is perfect.

We’ve got a winner, winner, chicken dinner on this week’s Restaurant Report Card as we visited Hattie B’s on Moreland Avenue in Atlanta. It’s a brand new restaurant that’s only been here a month, but the Nashville favorite has a new home here in Hotlanta.

What’s cool about this place is it’s inside of an old gas station that has been converted into this really cool restaurant.

First, here’s this week’s best and worst scores.

Just off Panola Road in DeKalb County, there’s trouble at the IHOP. The popular breakfast spot in Lithonia failed its last surprise inspection with 62 points and a “U” for unsatisfactory. The report said eggs, sausage and ham were at unsafe temperature.

Plus, bowls, plates and utensils stored as clean had old food residue on them. The report also said there were numerous flies and dead insects in the restaurant.

“What happened,” we asked.

“Nothing happened, everything is good,” the manager said.

“Wait a minute, you had a 62U?” we asked.

“Everything is good,” the manager repeated. “There is no comment sir.”

“That’s not good,” we said. “A 62U is not good.”

“Yes, I understand,” the manager said. “There is no comment. I told you, that’s what I have, basically everything has been fixed. IHOP is safe. We can serve pancakes anytime. We’re good.”

They may be good now, but we didn’t see the health inspection posted for the public to view, and the manager was quick to walk away from our questions.

“The things that jumped out, eggs, sausage and ham at unsafe temperatures, bowls, plates and utensils stored, sir can we go over a couple of these items?” we asked.

Other Scores

Cuban Diner in Marietta received a 93. Chili’s on Lawrenceville Suwanee Road is back on track after picking up a 94 on reinspection O’Charley’s on Highway 138 in Clayton County scored a 97

Golden Spatula Award Winner

And here at Hattie B’s Hot Chicken on Moreland, they scored a perfect 100 on their health inspection, and for that they are this week’s Golden Spatula Award Winner! When you come in, you can get your chicken pretty much any way you want it.

You can go Southern style with no heat, or you can go hot, “damn hot” or “shut the cluck up”, but it’s all so good.

Boy, that’s good!
