In recent months Rockdale County Jail has garnered the public's attention after two inmates were found dead in their cell.

On June 9 community members and family members of deceased inmates Shali Tilson and Jamie Henry protested outside the jail.

Twenty-two-year-old Tilson was pronounced dead March 12, just ten days after his arrest.

The GBI opened an investigation into the his death. An autopsy showed Tilson suffered a pulmonary thrombi due to dehydration.

A second inmate, Jamie Henry was found dead in her cell on May 27.

A cause of death has not yet been determined for the 40-year-old inmate.

On Tuesday Rockdale County Chairman Oz Nesbitt, Sr. released the following statement:"Recently people have been asking me to address certain events at the the jail.

First, to the families of Jamie Henry and Shalil Tilson let me express my deepest sympathy and condolences. I also want everyone to know there are on-going investigations surrounding the loss of your loved ones. As you may know, the jail is under the complete jurisdiction and authority of the Sheriff's Office.

I believe in due process and expect the investigation will provide a better understanding of what happened and how to improve as may be needed. God bless you, the United States of America, the great state of Georgia, and Rockdale County."
