Smyrna police release name of officer involved in shooting

The Smyrna Police Department has released the identity of the officer involved in the shooting of Nicholas Thomas.

The officer has been identified as Sergeant Kenneth Owens. Police were trying to arrest Thomas on a felony probation violation at work.

Owens has been with the Smyrna Police Department since September 2001 and is currently serving as the sergeant over the Street Crimes Unit.

The two other Smyrna police officers that were assisting in the warrant service that day are identified as Officer Chris Graeff and Officer Mark Cole.

The shooting is still under investigation with the Cobb County Police Department as well as the Smyrna Police Department internal affairs division.

Thomas' family is calling on the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to investigate.
