A suspect that fired shots that led to a SWAT situation outside his northwest Atlanta home early Thursday morning is dead after being shot by officers.

The incident began around 2 a.m. at the home on the 1400 block of Kennesaw Drive after officers were called to the scene on reports of possible shots fired. When they arrived on scene, the man allegedly began firing at the officers.

The man, later identified as DaShaun Shepard, was the only person inside the home. Some neighboring homes in the area were evacuated as a precaution. He was brought into custody around 8:15 a.m. after police fired a combination of shots and tear gas into the home to bring him out.

Shepard was struck by gunfire and later died. Police say the family of the suspect says he has a history of mental illness.

An officer sustained injuries to his forehead and arm but he's expected to be okay.
