A man was shot by Atlanta police officers Thursday afternoon after leading authorities on a chase.

Officers with the Atlanta Police Department encountered a stolen vehicle on Jonesboro Road around 3:20 p.m., according to a spokesperson with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, who is conducting an independent investigation of the officer-involved shooting.

The GBI spokesperson says after the officers tried to initiate a traffic stop, the suspect fled. Officers eventually stopped chasing the vehicle due to the conditions and speed of the chase, but the suspect eventually crashed on Forest Park Road, according to the spokesperson.

Officials say as officers approached the vehicle, the suspect rammed into a patrol car, sped away, and eventually rammed into a patrol car, again.

The spokesperson says officers shot the suspect, but couldn't immediately say why he was ultimately shot, instead saying the incident at the final crash scene remains under investigation.

The suspect is in intensive car at the hospital, according to authorities.
