GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. (CBS46) – Over 2,000 teachers were expected to stop at a Gwinnett County teacher giveaway Tuesday morning.

The event, sponsored by Kroger, provided a bag with $30 worth of supplies to each teacher.

"Nobody would be standing in line this long for this $30 worth of supplies if we didn't need it," said Aminah Colar, an elementary school teacher.

She told CBS46 the need for educators is real because many spend the year coming out of pocket for supplies.

The event volunteers agreed.

"How do you not give to the people that are educating your child?" one volunteer asked.

Many of the teachers drove from outside of Gwinnett County to be at the giveaway and said this was part of preparing for another year.

"We're already thinking about how lesson plans are going to work, what needs to be bought, what needs to go on the list," said Bianca Harrison, another elementary school teacher. "I have a couple coupons to use and we'll just see what I have when I start school in a couple weeks."

Kroger has this event annually and plans to hold another in Atlanta next week.

"Our teachers give so much to our students and they have students that are unfortunately not able to afford the basic needs," said Felix Turner, with Kroger.
