A teenage girl is dead and another is hospitalized following a crash along I-75 near Jonesboro Road on Monday.
The crash happened around 11:40 a.m.
Makayla Penn, 18, was killed in the crash. She was a passenger in the vehicle being driven by 17 year-old Cristina Pavon-Baker. Pavon-Baker was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta where her condition is unknown at this time.
Police tell CBS46 News that Pavon-Baker lost control of her Mini Cooper and veered off the roadway before crashing into a tree along the highway's exit. Police said the girls were headed to the mall after leaving school early for Senior Skip Day.
They were both students at Community Christian School near Stockbridge.
Fred Banke, Headmaster of the school, released this statement regarding the crash:
"Our CCS family is heartbroken and saddened by a tragic car accident that occurred this morning involving two of our students. We ask our community to pray with us and with our students as we grieve this devastating loss. We also ask for prayer for the recovery of our injured student and healing for our school family."
We have a full staff of pastoral counselors from our church, Community Bible Church, who will be available to help with grieving students and parents. A vigil will be held on Tuesday, March 27, at 7pm at Community Bible Church, to reflect and pray together for the injured student and for families of both students."
Pastors from Community Bible Church will provide grief counseling Tuesday.
