Woman's burned body found in Gwinnett County

A Gwinnett County couple walking in a Stone Mountain park on Wednesday made a grisly discovery.

Police say the couple found a burned body, later identified as that of Lauren Taylor, 26, of Dalton, Georgia, on a walking trail at DeShong Park in Stone Mountain. The discovery sent shock waves through the area.

"It is freaking me out," said Lorien Dunning, who lives in the area.

Police said the couple alerted officers who, ironically, were at the park at the same time.

"As the officers were getting ready to leave, they were flagged down by this couple and the couple advised them they had located a body - a dead body behind the pavilion on the sidewalk," said Cpl. Edwin Ritter, with the Gwinnett County Police Department.

"I was telling my husband it seems like someone is trying to make a statement or something. It is personal because they could have hid the body but they have it in the open like that. It is scary," Dunning said.

Some people who live in the area said they are having a hard time accepting what happened.

"A lot of people use this park for walking their dogs for doing different things, playing basketball and all that, but this time of day is surprising," Bill Laine said.

For some, DeShong Park will never be the same again.

"It is a very peaceful neighborhood and for me to hear that this went on is crazy to me," Dunning said.

An autopsy is being conducted to determine the cause of death.
