(Meredith) -- Severe weather hammered Texas Saturday, leaving extensive damage behind and leading to the deaths of at least two children.

One family was left searching through the rubble of their home to find their puppies.

For Sandra Verdell and her husband Byron, the place they’ve called home for 18 years was completely destroyed by a tornado.

After the tornado passed, while Sandra and Byron checked to make sure they were uninjured themselves, their 10-year-old dog Bella was searching for the tiniest members of their family – her four puppies.

Bella found two of her puppies, but the other two were still missing.

During a report by KETK, several people helped the Verdells search for the missing puppies. Thankfully, the two pups were found and appeared to be uninjured.

“Everybody is accounted for, we didn’t lose nobody,” Byron told KETK as he held the puppies.

While the Verdells are thankful for their safety and for that of their dogs, their belongings and keepsakes are gone – most of them now submerged in a swamp.

The Verdells said they don’t know what their next steps will be, but they are thankful for everyone who is working to help them.

“It is what it is. Can’t stop God’s work,” Byron told KETK. “So, just gotta take the bitter with the sweet.”
