BARTOW COUNTY, Ga. (CBS46)- A trooper and a suspect have been transported to a local hospital after exchanging gunfire during a traffic stop.
Authorities tell CBS46 the incident occurred on I-75 near exit 293 in Bartow County.
According to officials, the officer made a traffic stop on a violation of the slow poke law. A female driver was impeding traffic in the fast lane.
Once the officer pulled over the driver, he noticed drugs and guns in plain sight so he called for backup.
After being removed from the vehicle and being patted down, the passenger pulled a gun and fired a shot at the trooper. The trooper retreated and both troopers shot man. While being transported to a hospital, he died.
The trooper has been treated and was released from the hospital.
Police tell CBS46 reporter Vince Sims, the suspect who was shot was wanted on parole and had been on the run for eight months.
GBI has been requested and will be handling the investigation.
