Forecast for Barry

Tropical Storm Barry developed in the northern Gulf of Mexico Thursday, becoming the second storm of the 2019 Atlantic hurricane season.

Barry is expected to make landfall along the Louisiana coast late Friday or Saturday.

Alerts

Storm surge warnings and hurricane warnings are in effect along the Louisiana coast, while tropical storm warnings are in effect for the Mississippi and Alabama coasts.

Hurricane conditions -- rain and winds of at least 74 mph -- are expected as soon as tonight along the Louisiana coast.

Heavy rain along the Gulf Coast

Isolated rain totals of more than 20 inches are possible along parts of the Louisiana coast, with heavy rain also continuing along the coasts of Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.

Impact on north Georgia

Barry won't impact the weather in north Georgia.

However, rain chances will increase in north Georgia and metro Atlanta on Friday and Saturday due to a separate system -- a weak cool front -- moving in from the north.

2019 Atlantic hurricane season

A near-normal (9-15) number of storms are expected to develop in the Atlantic this season.

So far, there have been two storms this season, including Andrea and Barry.
